Snowy end to February.

On my way to lunch with KFizzle.

Either a ginormous child or an unemployed basketball player.

Question - Who is the mastermind behind this mammoth snowman?

No idea how long this snowman giant has been around, but judging by the lack of snow elsewhere (besides under the cars) my guess is sometime. No really. This this is monstrous.

Snowwwwww.

Listen up, people. Most of you are complaining about the snow. Maybe that's because you're trapped in a cube (ahhh, one perk of temporary unemployment). Perhaps you don't have boots or misplaced your wool socks. Regardless of your ill excuse, I have this much sympathy for you.

It's February in New York. For those of you who consider this concrete jungle the center of the universe, that's fine. This proverbial center also happens to lie somewhere between the frozen tundra of Canada and the equator. Suck it up, bundle up, and wipe that scowl off your frostbitten face. Get outside and enjoy the snow while it's here. Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite if you can't be bothered to - or simply can't - leave your desk for ten minutes.

I wandered trudged through midtown, Central Park, and the LES this afternoon snapping away. Additional pictures (some of my favorites) can be found on my Flickr page.

Like anything else these days, blame the cold.

Walk outside for more than a block and try to send a text; your frozen fingers won't get through the first "haha" or "lol" before your hands are officially frozen. Thumbs weak, moving slower than your mind.

Hands, noses, and chronic BBM'ers are not the only things affected by the arctic, when-the-hell-is-April weather. Corner crosswalk signs apparently can't take the frozen temperatures either.

Walk. Don't walk. Look uptown; downtown depending on the avenue. Just watch out for the suicidal delivery guys, whatever the season.

Summer is pretty much basically absolutely around the corner.

You might as well pack away the holiday decorations and bust out the sunscreen - summer is almost here!

Alright, not quite. But today was the mark of Winter Solstice, which for all intents and purposes is the most miserable day of the year. Forget about the frozen (or not, surprise!) puddles of black crud at every street corner, the dozens of presents yet to be purchased, and the New Year's Eve plans still up in the air. From here on out until to June 21st of next year our days grow longer. So cheers to the extra few minutes of daylight.

Thank you for your attention. You may now return to your regularly scheduled last-minute gift wrapping panic.

The storm lived up to its billing.

I humbly admit that I was wrong about the forecast. Unofficial readings (like sticking one's hand into a pile topping a car hood) vary, but it looks like we received 11 inches of wintry goodness. Just a reminder to everyone out there - what is white and nice today will be a gray curse during tomorrow's commute. Pull out the back up dress shoes; it's going to be nasty.

Someone over at Control Geek put together a time elapsed movie of the storm from their Brooklyn apartment window (one picture every 30 seconds).

That's it for today. Stay warm!

Hiding from the snow...

Today was not the day to run errands. Or get a haircut. Or rent a Zipcar and trek to the Long Island City Home Depot. But alas, it was.

Mud Truck parked in Astor Place, flurries just beginning.

Ghost Town.

"They" are calling for 10-12 inches tonight. I ballpark it around 4-6. We'll see what happens.

Get Mother Nature on the phone.

Of course. Two days after I write about spring showing its face slowly but surely, the temperature dropped double digits. It was downright cold walking to work in the morning. This picture is from the florist next to my office. Spring might have sprung, but winter is being a stubborn old mule. Tuesday should be a little better, with temps targeted for the high forties. But I guess I shouldn't complain; things are a lot worse out west.
