What is he doing on the Upper East Side?

Garbage day strikes again. De La Vega, the artist who's shop was on my old street (pre-Brooklyn move), somehow made his way to the Upper East Side for the day. It was a refreshing reminder for a message I was used to seeing tagged on everything from dumpsters to TV's on a daily basis.

Free to a good home.

Outside of the former Cooper Union building (and Starbucks!) was a line of school desk chairs. Leftovers from the building's gutting, the white sign on the fence behind them said "free." Who's going to take nearly a dozen school chair/desk combos? Side note: I, like every left handed student out there, LOATHED these chairs. Think about it. Leaning over to the side made for everyone else, life just didn't seem fair. Good riddance.

Ten bucks says Da La Vega tags them today.

Just another garbage day.

Passed this on the way to work. The become your dream graffiti tag (click the image to enlarge) is the work of local artist James Da La Vega. Hailing from East Harlem, he owns a small art gallery on St. Marks Pl. I admit that I've never been inside the shop, but I really don't feel the need. Daily art pops up on the streets either as graffiti markings on garbage like this example or as chalked sketches on the sidewalks. I wouldn't be surprised if more of De La Vega's work shows up here during the warmer months.
